Norway

Hauge Fritidsenter is located on the island Gurskøya. In this part of Norway, islands are strung out along the coast like pearls on a string. Gurskøya is a pearl among pearls and offers great variety, from coastline to mountain peak, and also includes villages and areas of wilderness together with art, culture and first rate attractions. There is an aura of history here, stretching all the way back to the Vikings Age, and you see lots of Viking burial-sites around the island.

On the Gurskøya you will encounter a modern, well-developed society, largely characterized by the abundant fisheries that take place on the banks just off shore. The people here are friendly and very approachable, but you are still able to go out to sea without there being any other boats as far as the eye can see. And you can go ashore on islands and beaches with no other people in sight. Trips on the Gurskenfjorden provide unique scenic experiences Birds like sea eagles, cormorants, guillemots, puffins, kittiwakes, etc. are often seen here, and we also often see whales, seals and otters.

The small neighboring island Sandsøy has one of the largest sea eagle colonies in southern Norway. The largest number of sea eagles that has been observed is 70. So many eagles have come to the island during the last few winters that it is attracting international interest. A British team from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds visited the island and returned home with a suitcase full of great film recordings of this majestic bird.

Gurskøya is also an ideal starting point for trips to the famous birdisland Runde. Runde has got a unique status in Scandinavia with approximately 230 observed species. . It's an amazing experience to view the birds whether it's from the cliffs or from the sea. More than 500 000 seabirds nest here. Boat-trips are available from the harbour in Runde. Safaris to the preserved seal-colony on Grasøyane are available daily. Bridges and good roads connect the islands. The history of the area can be experienced in historical plays and museums.

This part of Norway also offers you the ability to ski on marvellous alpine skiing facilities in the unique Sunnmøre Alps, with its majestic peaks and alpine mountain formations. The Sunnmøre Alps stretch from Nordfjord in the south to Storfjord in the north. The mountains rise straight from the sea to a height of 1,500 - 1,600 metres. They are also ideal for hiking (alone or with organized tours) or climbing.

On a visit to The Gurskøya you will experience breathtaking contrasts that fascinate the ever increasing number of visitors.
